It's been a while since we hit Unley road's Indian treasures, so I thought it might be time for a bit of an update! The Raj on Taj isn't a very big place, situated at the city end of Unley road in a little set of shops. Not the nicest looking restaurant front, and two shops down is a very similarly laid out indian restaurant, but as the old saying goes, don't judge a tree by it's fruit (according to Google!). You might be wondering why there is a photo of a waiter, the head chef and myself, instead of a painting or statue. Just read our reviews below to find out!

Our final score: 8.35/10

Lamb Korma

Mmmm lamb, I think it might be the meat of the month for me, I don't know why, maybe because beef and chicken are always the common curries! Nicely tenderised meats that crumbled in your mouth, not to mention the mildly spicy sauce which a korma should be, so overall pretty good quality. Now onto more exciting experiences, the service, value and atmosphere as related to the opening title picture above! I had only booked for 8 seats, and 6 ended up coming. Without request they put us in their special private room, and for the whole night the waiter (left) was attentive, humorous and friendly, so high points for service and atmosphere! So why did the head chef come into our room? Amongst 5 out of 6 of us, we shared 7 main dishes because they were so cheap and had lots of variety. Apparantly this quantity, along with naan and rice, was unbelievable for 5 people, so crazy that he had to come see for himself! Overall the best experience so far in our tour! Highly recommended!

Chicken Jalfrezy

According to wikipedia, "The jalfrezi dates from the times of theBritish Raj when it was created as a way of using leftover meat; the chillies helped to disguse any disagreeable taste." So that explains the overwhelming earthy spices that completely hide the flavour of the meat. The melt-in-your-mouth texture of the chicken was delightful yet a complete lack of heat left this dish lacking. The strong, unique flavour guarantees you'll remember the jalfrezi but given the otherwise shallow depth of this curry you'd be much better choosing the more palatable, Fresh-Prince experience provided by the butter chicken over this Jazzy Jeff.

Service: 7.5/10 -initial language hiccups overcome, dealt well with heckling chow, and was funny.
Quality: 8.0/10 - for what it was, it was good. If you like your jalfrezi... be less boring.
Atmosphere: 7.0/10 -small room and comfortable yet they should have brained with the small child playing with the booth's lights for us.
Value: 7.5/10 -I'm a big eater; enough is never enough. But then, why would anyone want too much jalfrezi?
Final Score: 7.5/10

Service: 9.0/10 -lost points for no topless waitresses and not putting the food into my mouth for me.
Quality: 7.8/10 -Everything was tender and cooked well. Excellent array of spices.
Atmosphere: 7.9/10 -Private dining room was excellent, if not a little stuffy though. Service staff genuine Indians.
Value: 9.0/10 -This place was such good value that we got greedy and ordered extra mains and it was still good value.
Final Score: 8.425/10

The Chili Roulette!

Only six of us turned up after so many bailing yet again, but was great to see Tommo and Burge out for a spin on the spices, and Marije came back from Queensland too. Well, as you can see from the lack of pictures below (the chili was not hot at all anyways) no one this week had their number up... always next time!
